Bouldering in Alabama Hills
This hiking trip to the Sierras to summit lone pine peak was made even more fun by the prospect of Cragging outside of the Alabama Hills just outside Tuttle Creek. The Alabama Hills are considered a climbing destination by themselves. Because of the crowd I was going with I couldn't really bring my technical climbing equipment and expect to be able to train and lead a route all in the same trip. So I brought my bouldering pad, shoes, and a chalk bag and hoped for the best.
My initial resource on mountain project indicated that there were no bouldering whatsover in The Alabama Hills. The fun part about that was trying to glean information by word of mouth. I asked about it in bars in Lone Pine, climbing stores, and asking people for hand drawn maps.
And I found some stuff to climb. The routes were just a tad taller than I like to climb as a general rule, and I feel a little more experienced downclimbing after even the small amount we did when we were out.
