Climbing Middle Earth at Mission Trails Region Park

This morning Scott and I drove to Mission Trails Regional Park to Climb in Middle earth. I hit it pretty hard in the gym this past week, and was starting to feel some pesky right shoulder pain again. My hard hitting gym time also caused my old shoes to slip more often than I would like. I decided to leave those in the car and take my second pair out for thier maiden voyage. I felt really wierd about that. My second pair are tighter than my first, and I can't stand to walk around in them for more than a little bit. It went well. I think I might have to send my first pair in to get resoled and leave the ones I wore today as strictly outdoor climbing shoes.

Scott tells me that I should just go ahead and throw away my first pair of climbing shoes. They are worn out all into the heel and those wouldn't get repaired by the resoleing people. And besides, womens shoes tend to be cheaper than mens shoes, and are on sale more often.

The first mess we hit was sunshine wall. I immediately hammered out a 5.8 on the left of the wall and scott conquered the first 5.11 I have witnessed outdoors.Sunshine wall is aptly named because it gets nice and sunny really early, about 10am. We were climbing on it by 8am.

My confidence went through the roof. Especially because that 5.8 felt like a 5.4. After that, we pulled the rope to the right and I climbed my first 5.9 outdoors. It was a little bit easier to use the arete than to not, but I am still proud of myself to doing that one at all. There was such a pendulum swing that I felt a little scared even.

You can see the arete clearly in this one.
I got some excellent photos of Michael doing some really good moves on a 5.10.

What was nice about mission gorge was that the routes weren't so threadbare that you could actually get ahold of the textured rock. I would definately return

If you recall, I've been climbing in mission gorge before. The very first time I climbed outdoors we went to mission trails. You can read about that here
