I heard about Lightning Brewery from the New York Times of all places. I was all over the NYT 36 hours in Palm Springs article during our visit there, and checked out the 36 hours in San Diego article out of curiosity. Most of the things on that list were pretty standard. Coronado, Belmont Park, and Torrey Pines are all good solid places to visit while in San Diego. Lightning Brewery was a huge standout. I mean, there are dozens of breweries in San Diego, what was so special about Lightening? To a newcomer, I would have suggested Stone or Karl Strauss.
I knew the beer at Lightning was good. I've bought thundervizen from the grocery store near my house. I went to see what all the fuss was about.
Long story short, the beer was excellent. I had a plisner, a pale ale, and the black lightning porter. I didn't want to get thundervizen because we literally had a bottle of it at home. We have grown a taste for Hef's so I wanted to try to stray from that a little lest we never have any new experiences in our entire life. Still, alex got a Dunkel-vizen that is in the hefeweizen family that I wish I would have gotten for myself.
We had a ton of fun despite the hole in the wall brewery being nothing special to look at. We are obliged to return shortly as we still have some of their beer vouchers left over from our last tasting. I swear, that 5 dollar tasting is the best deal in town.

The black lightning was so good. It was subtle and delicious. It tasted like coffee, but the description said there was no coffee in it.

Upon closer inspection, they do not sell growlers of black lightning porter. |
