Alex and I went to the Del Mair Fair this saturday. It was quite a decision to go. I haven't been for over 3 years, and the last time I really went as a fair goer (not as an exhibitor) was over 5 years ago. I felt like a change of pace so we decided to brave the crowds and just go. It turned out to be so much fun!
I checked the weather the day before. I know that is incredibly unusual for a San Diegan, but I knew that I shouldn't wear thick jeans if it was going to be topping 100 degrees. The weather report read 80 degrees (hot, but still doable), so I put out some canvas shorts and a lululemon sweat wicking tee-shirt aside.
Rain was pouring when we woke up. It was really surprising considering its been a low-rain year with the drought and everything. You would think those weathermen could sniff out rain hundreds of miles out with all this pressure on. I know I should just let it rain, but it seems that everytime it rains it ruined some sort of plan I had, you know? Thats funny because I think its rained a total of 5 times in the last year.
We decided to go anyway so I threw on a quick dry running jacket and hat and went. It turned out to be perfect. The rain scared a lot of people away and it actually didn't rain nary a drop while we were out and about. The overcast also made it not too sunny and no one got a sunburn. It was a big deal. I've never seen a more ideal Fair day.
The theme of the fair this year is "it all started at a fair" to advertise that the only reason the del mar fair grounds and balboa park exists is because San Diego was the site of the panama-california worlds fair in 1915. It was neat. They had mini scultures of balboa park structures scattered throughout. The theme of the day was "gospel" which also had some affect on our visit this day.
One disappointing part of today was that they took away our selfie stick. We planned on taking lots and lots of selfies today but for whatever reason they consider Selfie sticks weapons. It was disappointed, and we had to pay 2 dollars to check it at the gate as well.
We took this photo with our selfie stick as a consolation prize.
The tempatation to ruin yourself on fair food came early. I had just eaten breakfast at home so I wasn't too aroused by the prospect, but alex gave in really soon. He bought the biggest craziest turkey leg that I have ever seen! He ate the whole thing king author style in front of me too.
Then we saw this pie eating contest. It was adorable. The hosts of the events were hilarious. The babies were so cute. All the children got prizes even though some of them didn't eat much pie at all.
The adults were so intense. The girl at the left of this photo actually won the whole shebang. She just threw it down. I have never seen anyone swallow a whole pie in 15 seconds flat before. It was notable. My money was on the big guy.
We made our way to the agriculture barn to see sheep shearing next. I think the animals are the best part of the fair.
Barn Selfie. Alex is wearing the go-pro in all of these.
The sheep was making the most irate sounds. He kept Baa-ing everytime the shearing lady flipped it over. It wouldn't say it as as intense as something deserving of the world "graphic" would be, but it was intense.
We saw some of the gospel day action on the way to the home and hobby area. I think we would have sat around and enjoyed this more if there wasn't a vegan food demonstration to be attended!
The vegan demonstration was very delicious. We were about 10 minutes late after hustling over from the Sheep Shearing event so we missed the roasted corn appetizer. We were in time for the 9 minute chili demonstration as well as the avocado chocolate fudge, however.
Afterwards we scooted back over to the agriculture area to check out the Swifity Swine races. So cute. By the time we made it there was standing room only. The pigs are so adorable. One of these days I will pay to have my phone to taken with swify.
An event I haven't seen before was called "puppy play pen" where people sat and petted dogs. I didn't feel like petting new dogs since Ive got one at home dying to be petted. They were so adorable. I didn't get a photo, but there was also a lady suffering from some sort of head trauma directly adjacent to the pen. Everyone was so blissed out on the puppies that barely anyone noticed, not even me. She was getting medical attention, so I suppose its good that it happened in such relaxing part of the fair so there weren't as many lolligagers.
There were two small pups. So adorable. They are so sweet when they are little like that.
Also in the family fun area were a phillipino and polynesian dance group. Those girls really looked great up there. It was also neat when I look carefully at the coconut bras that they aren't all exactly the same. They probably make them so they are the right size. I bet somewhere there is a Victorias Secret of coconut bras out there.
The fido 500 came shortly after. The photo below is of the dachshund barely missing the jump. He just did not make it the poor baby.
Rocky Road Carmel Apple yum!!
Time for the rides! We went onto the ferris wheel. Here is a picture of us in line...
And a photo from the top!
Then we went onto the alien abduction ride! I actually love this ride, ever since I was a little girl. It made alex feel sick, though. I think it was mostly the turkey leg that made him feel sick, just saying.
We saw a little bit more folk dancing at the plaza stage.
Here is another selfie in the gems and minerals barn. We were trying to take lots of selfies since they took away our selfie stick.
Overall a great day. If you noticed alex was wearing his Gopro. I think I'll be seeing photos on his side soon.
Bye!
