While walking around the bookstore today, looking for the bookwriting software my friend Carol suggested, I realized that I wanted to read ALL OF THESE books. I realized what I wanted to do with my life. I want to write. Thinking back on my life, writing is the only thing in my life I've ever been good at, ever been proud of. The only A's I've gotten in college were in my writing courses. Unfortunately, I never saw myself among the likes of the literature majors on campus, and the thought of it being my major never crossed my mind.
I have no regrets. Working in a scientific laboratory has been facisinating, and its the best part of my life now. With this background, I have a vision of the future that I wouldn't have gotten being a classically trained writer. I want to use all this knowledge and expertise that I've gained with nanomachines and chemical engineering to write something truly unique. I want to be a science fiction writer. I want to be Michael Crichton with a tinge of Tom Robbins, but sentimental and thematic - a toned down Orson Scott Card.
So here is my plan. I am going to graduate college with my B.S in Chemical Engineering. Then I am going to move to Missouri to be with my family as I take on a Chemical Engineering position. Then I want to get a researched based masters (or Ph.D if I can get in!). I want to do research because that is where the futuristic technology is being made. I believe I can get the experience I would get in an M.eng on the job. I believe that this degree will be vital to me because it will keep me uncomfortable, on my toes, and creative. That is probably the same reason I want to move back to my parents.
Then I will turn one of my short stories into my first book.
I plan on keeping a job in chemical engineering for the rest of my life. My ambitions do not lie in the chemical engineering field because I do not wish to be powerful or rich. I never thought I could be truly great doing that. I am simply proficient. This writing goal excites me because I believe that it is something I could be great at. It will be my ticket to the useful life I've always dreamed I'd have.
