Old Vs New FE exam


Did you notice that they changed the FE Exam? It seems that I got in just under the wire, because the new exam is WAY different. I put together a little list of what I can tell are the major differences between the old and new exam.

Old FE exam
New FE exam as of January 2014
Offered twice per year
Offered in four “windows” per year. You can take 1 test per “window”
$150 registration fee
$225 registration fee
Paper exam only
Computer exam
Results after several months, typically 3-6
Results in 7-10 days, no more than 30
Unapproved items are placed in a box, retrieved with the honor system
All items are stored in a locker
Photo Id + confirmation notice is used for entrance
Photo ID

Digital Photo taken at testing site
Palm vein scan taken at testing site
Required for entry
8 hour test period with 1 hour lunch break. Unscheduled bathroom breaks count against testing time.
5 hour 20 minute exam time with 25 minute scheduled break offered after 55 questions. Unscheduled breaks are allowed as often as needed and DO NOT count against the testing time
Can retake exam at every test offering.
Can retake exam 3 times in a 12 month period
120 questions morning exam, 60 questions afternoon exam
110 questions total are scored
No “pretest” questions
“pretest” questions are not scored but are indistinguishable from other questions
Snacks/lunch items are stored in a clear plastic bag under your desk
Everything, including your watch and eyeglasses go in your personal locker of which you have the key.
