10 things lately… June

1. I successfully completed my new years resolution of learning 1 song on the accordion. I can play all the lines of La Valse d’Amelie. While I can’t play it extraordinarily well, I feel like I have a little piece I can play should someone ask. I am really proud of myself because I didn’t obsess over this in a way that would tire me out to the point where I would never want to even look at my accordion again. I played just 20 minutes every day until it turned into a sustainable habit. Currently, I can play Fur Elise, America the Beautiful, and Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Although, La Valse D’Amelie is the only one I can play with both hands, i.e, using the treble and base in addition to the right hand keys.

Part of the hard work was coming up with tabs for both hands. Alex and I painstakingly made music by picking apart a you tube video, but this is not a sustainable way to do it, especially when I want to learn to play another song.

This is quite an accomplishment for me. I have never been able to play an instrument before, and I am finding this quite empowering. I am also feeling quite good about my ability to carry out New Years Resolutions.

2. I ordered a Box from Thredup. I will share it when I get it this Thursday! I am pretty excited about it because its essentially a box of cardigens.

3. I am mocking up a new painting! I have feeling a bit of an artistic block lately seeing as I haven’t finished a new painting in over 6 months. I decided not to let myself get hung up on composition like I can let myself do, so I decided to keep it simple and do something nice and easy. And no kitchen is complete without a wine and cheese painting, right?

4. I dropped the summer statics class I was taking. It was too much too soon, and my work performance was starting to suffer. My work performance is the most important thing to me. The whole reason I was taking this class was to be better at my job. I had to keep the long game in mind for this decision. The semester will be a much better time to take the course.

5. My birthday was at the end of may! For my birthday, we went to this amazing restaurant called the Barrel Room Located in Rancho Bernardo, San Diego. I loved it. I went all out and got wine, an appetizer, and desert with dinner. If I can’t do that on my birthday, I don’t know when I can do it!

6. We went to Las Vegas over memorial day holiday. You can read about that here

7. I went to the library last weekend and picked up some new to me books. The one I am currently engaged with is called ,”What I did for love” by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. There is a lot of variability with romance novels, and this one has passed the test of being readable to the 100th page. I am looking forward to writing a review at Voracious Books

8. I bought the second most expensive bottle of wine I have ever gotten yesterday. If you know me, you know that my favorite and most exclusive drinking habits involve Pinot Noir and Tempernillo. The bottle of Migration by Russian River Valley was at the recommendation of a friend. At 30 dollars, I have had better. Its great on the nose, has a high alcohol content, but lacks in tannins. I am all about the tannins.

9. I am planning on making a porch pottie for my dog. Its hard to keep her walked especially in the middle of the night when she has been holding it all day. This is the option I have for my little apartment dwelling pup. I am going to DIY this so hard. I am thinking plans up as we speak.

10. I lost yet another ebay auction for a Kate Spade Jillian dress. This time it was a cotton candy striped all silk number. I have been on the hunt for a jillian dress for exactly 18 months now. I was the highest bidder with $125 for 3 days before someone vigorously outbid me in the last 30 seconds. The price went up from $125 to  $170. In an effort to stop myself from getting carried away in the heat of the moment, I decided to walk away.

Hopefully we'll have more adventures in June and July!
