People would ask me in the days and weeks leading up to our
trip if we planned on staying in an all inclusive hotel. The answer was no. I
was worried about being able to eat healthy enough on my vegetarian diet in a
prix fixe dining arrangement. The cost for the all inclusive experience was
also prohibitive for the trip. I decided we could get more for our money
staying at a hotel just off the beach and in San Jose Del Cabo instead of the
more popular Cabo San Lucas. These sister cities are collectively known as “Los
Cabos” and I thought it would be, well, good enough.
When I got to the hotel I was pleased that the ocean was
only a block or two away. However, I was alarmed that there didn’t seem to be
any infrastructure. There were no kayaks to rent, no surfboard lessons, no
beach bars. All the bars on the beach were associated with all inclusive
hotels, and the hotel bouncers could spot you like a hawk if you were a non all
inclusive affiliate.
I was starting to become anxious that I wasn’t experiencing
the beach resort experience like I envisioned when I booked the trip. For this
reason, we decided to get a day pass at one of the few resorts that allowed
that sort of thing: Barcelo del Faro in San Jose Del Cabo. I laid around in the
sexiest bathing suit I owned for 8 hours, played horseshoes and corn hole, ate
two cheeseburgers, drank about 15
assorted cocktails, and read 200 pages of my book while slowly watching my
newly minted husband get the worst sunburn of his life.
