Day 2 of 7 of our Honeymoon in Los Cabos
Alex and I plotted our trip over the hotel’s buffet
breakfast. We planned to do some recon: check out the beach without planning on
spending any appreciable time there, then check out the downtown plaza area and
do some light shopping.
When we got to the beach we noticed that nothing was there!
We were expecting kayak rentals and surf lessons. There weren’t even any other
tourists. This is when we decided we might have to spend more time in Cabo San
Lucas than we originally thought.
We headed downtown and passed an artisanal shopping plaza.
It was completely isolated. The shop
proprietors were playing chess in the plaza waiting for the few and far between
existent customers to meander by. They were all over us when we passed over,
and we found it entirely overwhelming. It was scary to show interest in a
knick-knack. I left with a beautiful blue bracelet, and there are some ceramics
that I am still thinking about buying. Since we are here for a few more days I
want to spend some time shopping around. In particular I wanted to buy a chip
and dip with removable inserts painted in brightly colored dandelions and chili
peppers. I saw one in the specialty shop on the high end of downtown for $140
USD (!) and I think I might be able to get a slightly better price at the
artisanal area. If only I wasn’t too intimidated to ask while I was there!
After a bit of walking we made it the downtown plaza. There
was a massive Mexican flag that fluttered in the wind. It was beautiful. I do
not normally see a flag that size on a flag pole so short. We wandered around
the area, again overly accosted by aggressive sales men. The streets were
narrow and cobbled. Cars were tightly packed on every available curb space. We
took a few detours attempting to find Flora Farms, the vegetarian restaurant
prominently described in my Lonely Planet Guide book, but to no avail. We found
a flora farms corporate office instead, which I found quite funny actually.
For dinner we decided to eat the Rock and Brew, the lesser
known rock and roll themed bar in town started by Gene Simmons of Kiss instead
of you know who of you know where. Rock and Brew was an “American” Style bar
that boasted its large collection of Craft Beers. We were considering having a
more authentic dinner experience but this restaurant was highly regarded by the
shuttle driver who took us from the airport. We also learned from their twitter
feed that they were having a two for one pizza special tonight so we decided to
give it a go. We ended up having a delicious margherita pizza, a german style
pretzel to go with our 2 oatmeal stouts, one cactus wheat, and a pelioroja red.
Afterwards we went to the gelato house directly adjacent and shared a chocolate
blanca.
We enjoyed a lovely walk back in the twilight.
Tomorrow we plan on waking up early and having a day pass at
the Barcelo.
