Its a metaphor |
I managed to do my 3 mile loop faster than I ever have before last night. I did it wearing my brand new lululemon long sleeve run reflect stripped mint moment shirt. As you know, I took five days off of running due to some gnarly illness that I kept on making worse by running half marathons and stuff.
Its not massively impressive when you compare me to serious runners. But 9:36 min/mile for me is no joke, especially when my course has that 400ft incline.
Can I call it a PR when it happens during a training run? Race PRs can't be disputed, but this was just me messing around.
The Garmin training center software comes with this neat compare tool so you can see how this was so much better than even just a month ago. The blue line is my PR!
There were more than a few differences between this run and, well, all of my other runs.
1) Time of day. Evening run vs before work morning run
2) Food. I ate GF pasta for dinner instead of my usual breakfast quinoa.
3) Rest. This was done after a 5 day running break. Usually my 3 milers are after running just the day before.
4) Clothing. I wore a brand new shirt but I was also wearing some compression shorts instead of my normal leggings.
5) Music. I normally listen to Pandora One, but I instead listened to a podcast on crying at work. That is pretty psychological change, and I would think that listening to a talk show would make me run slower than listening to dubstep, but it is a difference.
6) Breathing. Lately I've been trying to do the Runners World Breathing 3in 2out breathing thing, but I just ignored that today. I just tried to remember to breath out.
Maybe its a fluke? I've actually never run a legit 5k race without breaking 30 minutes, so this is new for me. I feel a tad sore even though my 3 milers usually don't make a dent.
What do you think? should I count it as a PR even though it was just a training run?
