I kept everything from my first stitchfix. I was crippled with indecision so I did what I always do when I am in an emotional and financial holding pattern: I made a spreadsheet.
So if you are wondering what a stitchfix is, go ahead and read about my first box.
I had a red shirt, a blue shirt, a chevron shirt, a dress, and a necklace, to be sparse about it. The cost breakdown looks like this
items | price |
red shirt | $48.00 |
dress | $98.00 |
chevron | $58.00 |
blue shirt | $88.00 |
necklace | $32.00 |
merch total | $324.00 |
merch total + tax | $349.92 |
They throw a wrench in by offering 25% off if you buy all 5 pieces. Also they take off the $20 I put down before when they mailed it.
all 5 | $228.00 |
all 5 + tax | $246.24 |
Its easy for people to see what they like and don't like. My problem was I liked everything in the box okay. Everything was a lovely quality and looked better than everything else I already owned. The prices were high. I had a hard time weighing worth in this situation. I wanted to keep the blue shirt definitely, the dress maybe, the red shirt looked nice, and maybe the chevron shirt and I didn't care much for the necklace. My problem is that I liked the two most expensive items in the box the most. I only had to pay little bits more to keep everything.
In an ideal situation I would keep the blue shirt, the red shirt, and the dress. This is how the costs break down.
sum cost | -$20.00 | after tax
group 1 | $234.00 | $214.00 | $231.12 |
blue shirt | |||
dress | |||
redshirt | |||
Returned | $15.12 | ||
chevron shirt | |||
necklace |
So if I paid for this situation, I would pay $231 and be saving $15 by sending these two items back. I felt like this would be a waste because I think I would pay $15 for that necklace alone. This is not an acceptable situation.
Another possible situation was keeping the blue shirt.
sum cost | -$20.00 | after tax
Group 3 | $88.00 | $68.00 | $73.44 |
blue shirt | |||
Returned | $172.80 | ||
dress | |||
necklace | |||
red shirt | |||
chevron |
I would pay $73 dollars for that blue shirt. Okay fine. That is okay. I do love the blue shirt. This would also mean the cost of the remaining items is 172.80. This situation is acceptable. I want that dress though.
Here is the third option that makes the deciding movie.
sum cost | -$20.00 | after tax
group 2 | $186.00 | $166.00 | $179.28 |
dress | |||
Blue Shirt | |||
Returned | $66.96 | ||
Red Shirt | |||
necklace | |||
chevron | |||
I think $179 is too much to pay for just the dress and the blue shirt. I decided that I would feel like I would get the most value if I just kept them all, because keeping any smaller group of individual items was paying too much.
It would be different if I only liked the necklace, or any of the lesser priced blouses. So I just bit the bullet and bought it all. I do not regret it. I do hate that I had to add 20 dollars to the price of the dress because it needed to be hemmed so so so bad.
But what the hell. I would do it again.
