10 Things Lately... January

My values, sorted. The cards on the very right are what "define" me.

1. I did a goal alignment exercise with the cards I got from a similarly themed workshop I attended in college. The cards are called "Personal Value Card Sort" by W.R Miller, J. C'de Baca, D.B Matthews, and P.L. Wilborne from the University of New Mexico, 2001. If you would like to do this yourself, you can print out your own cards here.

2. I have been playing Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers ever since my friend Scott introduced them to me during my Joshua Tree Camping Trip. Its amazing, and I can't believe that my pandora station hasn't heard of him yet. It is like modern folk music with a traditionally jewish sound. You can listen to the WHOLE album at http://store.bencaplan.ca/. I particularly like "Seed of Love" and "Down to the River".

3. I have been tripping out on the art of Richard Coleman. I heard about him while looking for DIY playing card upcycling projects. Its so surreal, but I feel like I have seen it all before.

Art by Richard Coleman.

4. I went on a Ski Trip to Lake Tahoe to learn how to ski! I loved it so much that I am going to try to find a way to keep skiing from my vantage point in San Diego. I think Mt. High or big bear would be doable.
Me in Lake Tahoe!

5. I have been Netflixing LilyHammer like crazy. The show is about an Italian mafioso who moves to Norway to start a new life. The show touches my heart in the way they address diversity. I think it gets weird in the second season though.

6.I went to Joshua Tree for some outdoor rock climbing December 26th-28th. I LOVED it. I got to work on my rappel technique a bit. I am well on my way to setting up my own topropes after a few more demonstrations.

7. I am still reading The Forgers Spell. I can tell that I find paint forgery less glamorous than the author does, and I don't have as much appreciation for it either. The author's enthusiasm is NOT infectious.

8. I became enamored by the poetry of Mary Oliver in the Book American Primitive while sitting in the spa at the Ritz. I started reading an old copy of A Little Treasury of Modern Poetry while camping in Indian Cove and I realized that while I am WAY out of my league here, I could really learn to love this.

The following poem is lovely:

" Every day
I see or here
something
that more or less
kills me
with delight "

9. I bought myself a pair of Mountain Hardwear Yuma convertible pants on sale at REI. I can't tell if they are dorky yet! I've been wanting to fit in at the crag for so long..

10. I ordered my first photoalbum from costco printing services. I have been wanting to make a print portfolio for a while, and I finally got a good chance to try Costco's low cost ($20!) service. I made a photo album for the friends I went to Tahoe with. Even if it doesn't turn out well enough to use for my physical photography portfolio, I am sure it will be a wonderful memory to share with my friends.
