10 Things Lately... Mid January

This 10 things lately is just a tad late!

1. My friends Matt and Casey had a lovely bridal shower on January 4th. It was an extremely classy and well organized event. It makes my party ambitions tingle.

2. I went to Santee Boulders for the first time on January 4th! I mastered 4 routes on this trip, and notably no cracks.

3. I went to Mission Trails Regional Park on January 11th. I mastered 3 routes on this trip, including my first 5.9 outdoors.

4. I went to Mt Woodson on January 19th and climbed the hardest technical climbs I have ever gotten outdoors. I even did a 5.10b! on girls climb! The day was clockwork orange themed.

5. Daily Mile gave me a year end report. I ran 461 miles last year. It says I burned 14 pounds, but that isn't exactly true. I weigh exactly the same as I did before.

6. My gym climbing is getting way better, by leaps and bounds. I climbed 3 5.10's in the gym. These are my first 5.10's since I hurt my shoulder. I've also never climbed them so easily before. I am getting really masculine, beefy arms, in like, a good way.

 7. I watched the Documentary "Chasing Ice" and it blew me away. There is something so romantic to me about Artic exploration ala Fridtjof Nanson, but I am realizing that this may be an adventure of the past. The world is changing too rapidly. Soon we will be living underwater and pollinating crops by hand.

8. I am on lesson 22 of Pimsleurs Italian. I have been listening to 1 a day, and been listening to each one twice. I am trying to meet the goal of getting through all 90 lessons of Italian 1-4 by the end of the year. I feel optimistic, although at this point, the novelty has worn off quite a bit.

9. I have been using the Moves app to track my walking. Its not as accurate as my garmin is, and I don't take my cell phone when I run. I am using it to make sure that I dont get lazy with my walking on days that I run. One of my friends mentioned to me that it is healthy to walk 10,000 steps a day, and that has been my informal goal. To make that goal, I've been having to walk to and from work (not far, I assure you), take an extra 20 minute walking break at lunch, and walk my dog for 20 minutes when I get home. Even then, Its been hit or miss on making that goal.

10. Poetry is amazing. I have a few that I am starting to carry with me to ponder in my spaceless time. I even wrote a poem. I would share, but this isn't livejournal.

My new favorite poem is Invictus by William Ernest Henley:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
